The 5 W's of Psychological Testing...

How Psychological Testing can impact your child's progress:

1. Who Can Benefit from Psychological Testing, and who can request an evaluation?

  • Children with educational, emotional, or cognitive challenges.

  • Any parent/guardian, or teacher that has a concern about a student's performance/behavior can make a request for an evaluation through the child's school.

2. What is Psychological Testing?

  • Psychological Testing is a tool that can support your child's educational experience. It involves tests that gather information about the student. The information will help to clarify your child's strengths and weaknesses and facilitate developing a plan. When this plan is implemented both at home and at school it can result in optimal performance.

3. When should a request for Psychological Testing be initiated?

  • As early as possible! When concerns are voiced and heard, it's time to put the wheels in motion. The key to success is early intervention.

4. Where is Psychological Testing conducted?

  • Psychological Testing can be performed at your child's school as indicated above or within a private office setting. The may be variability on time frames to completion depending on the entity that is conducting the assessment. Further, the cost within a private office setting may/may not be covered by insurance. However, when conducted within the school system, there is no cost.

5. Why is there a need for Psychological Testing?

Not knowing or understanding what's going on can be very frustrating for a child or their family. Testing can provide clarification of diagnosis and treatment recommendations that can decrease distress and help students reach their optimal potential.
